Choosing Right vs. Easy: A Simple Shift for Lasting Change
We often encounter small yet pivotal moments in life where we have to choose between what’s easy and what’s right for our growth. This isn’t about moral correctness, but rather choosing what aligns with the life we want to create versus defaulting to our old habits.
I came up with the 'Right vs. Easy' practice during a time when I was working to shift a deep-rooted pattern within myself. I realized I was consistently procrastinating, waiting until the last minute to do everything from paying bills to leaving the house. It gave me a sense of thrill maybe?, but it was stressing me out and draining my energy.
One evening, I was heading home and noticed I needed to fill up on gas. Instantly, I felt resistance. I don’t feel like it. I can do it tomorrow, I told myself. But then, a new question popped into my head: Am I going for Right or Easy?
Choosing Right meant filling up the tank now, so I wouldn’t have to rush around in the morning. Choosing Easy meant avoiding the inconvenience and facing the stress of dealing with it later. I realized I was perpetuating unnecessary stress in my life simply by choosing the easy route most of the time.
That night, I made a conscious choice to go for Right. I filled up the gas and felt a sense of relief and empowerment. This small act became the catalyst for what I now call the Right vs. Easy practice.
The Power of Right vs. Easy:
'Right' means making the choice that supports the direction you want to move in, even if it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. It’s a commitment to your growth, goals, and well-being. 'Easy' is usually the automatic, unconscious, or habitual choice, often driven by resistance, avoidance, or old patterns that keep you stuck.
With intention and consistency, the Right vs. Easy practice can bring awareness to the present moment and reveal the power you have to shape your reality through each decision. It helps you zoom in on those split-second choices and ask: Does this align with the life I want to create, or is it a default response keeping me in a loop?
Implementing Right vs. Easy in Your Life:
Next time you feel that pull towards avoiding a task, ask yourself: Am I choosing Right or Easy? If it’s easy, take a breath and imagine what it would feel like to go for right instead. Even if it’s just one small action, notice how it shifts your energy and sense of self.
